Q: What does "MEMRA" mean?
A: MEMRA is Aramaic for "word."
Q: Is online learning with MEMRA right for me?
A: Taking a course with MEMRA is for anyone comfortable navigating the internet and a desire to learn. In general, a student that has the following attributes is ready for online learning: (1) comfortable with computer technology; (2) good time management skills; (3) independent and self-motivated; (4) good reading comprehension skills.
Q: Do I need any special equipment or software for taking courses?
A: There are two essential items required for taking MEMRA courses: a computer (any operating system) and a high speed internet connection (i.e., not dial-up).
Q: Is there a deadline for registering for MEMRA courses?
A: Yes. Registration for MEMRA courses ends two weeks prior to the start of each module. See the Registration page beginning dates for each six-week module session and the registration deadlines. Discounted tuition rates may end earlier than the module deadline.
Q: When do students pay for courses?
A: Students pay for each course when they register online through the MEMRA website. Courses must be paid in full for students to begin the course.
Q: Are textbooks included with MEMRA course registration cost?
A: No. registration tuition costs do not include textbook payment. Students must acquire textbooks on their own prior to the beginning of the course. There are links to Amazon.com listings for each required textbook under the course descriptions. Students should note that the professor will also require other readings he will provide in addition to, or in place of, textbook reading.
Q: What is a "module"?
A: A module refers to a six week class period. See the course calendar for modules and their dates. Most MEMRA courses are six weeks long. Most ancient language courses run for 52 weeks and begin that sequence each module.
Q: Are MEMRA courses accredited? Can I earn a degree from MEMRA?
A: MEMRA courses are not accredited, and the institute offers no degrees. The emphasis is on delivering content in a low-pressure environment.
Q: Does MEMRA Institute have a refund policy?
A: Yes. Students will receive a full refund for courses if they notify the professor of their desire to withdraw prior to the beginning of the course (i.e., the first scheduled day of the course). Once the course begins there is no refund.
Q: Can courses be cancelled? What happens if I am registered for a course that is cancelled?
A: Yes, MEMRA reserves the right to cancel a course. Generally speaking, at least five people need to be registered for a course at the time the course is scheduled to begin. If fewer than five people are registered for a course, that course is subject to cancellation unless the professor wishes to offer it to fewer students. In the event a course is canceled, those registered will be informed of the cancellation and receive a full refund.
Q: Where and how do I access my course?
A: All courses are accessed in the Classroom tab on this website. Accessing the MEMRA classroom requires a user name and a password. About a week before the course begins students will receive an email with a generic user name and password for accessing the Classroom. Once logged in, students must create their own user name and password for continued access. Courses in the classroom are delivered via the MOODLE platform, widely-used in distance education. Once inside the Classroom, students have access to video tutorials for becoming acquainted with the MOODLE environment. If a student forgets his or her user name and password, they should email Dr. Heiser at mshmichaelsheiser@gmail.com.
